Black and Decker LSWV36 36V Lithium Ion Sweeper/Vac Review

I've been using my trusty Toro 51599 Ultra 12 amp Variable-Speed Electric Blower/Vacuum with Metal Impeller for a while now and it's been working great. But as with all corded tools... you have a cord. My concern with going cordless was that they wouldn't be powerful enough to get the job done. So let's see how the B&D LSWV36 handled the job.

SETUP

Out of the box you have have the sweeper itself, the battery with charger, a bag with a tube attached, and 4 separate tubes. They basically pair off and snap into each other. One is for use in Vac mode, and the other for Sweeping. Connecting them together required quite a bit of force, but fortunately this is a one-time task for initial assembly only.

That's really about it for "assembly." I found that it was rather simple to figure out how it goes to together and switch between vac/sweeper mode. It also comes with plenty of instructions if you like to read, but the picture on box is probably enough. :)

DESIGN

The unit itself is surprisingly compact and light weight. Even with the battery and sweeper attachment, I could easily walk around using it single handed. Speaking of holding it, the air-intake is on the left side of the device. So if you have loose clothing or allow it to get too close to you, you'll find that it frequently wants to stick to you.

Solution... use it with your left hand. :)

I'd prefer the intake to be on the bottom as with my Toro, but it's a minor issue. When in vac mode that's also not an issue since the tube will be in the way. As expected, it does weigh a bit more when in Vac mode, but B&D was thoughtful enough to put an extra handle towards the front for when it gets full of leaves.

Otherwise there is a switch on the top to turn it on/off as well as a dial towards the back to adjust power. These things are usually rather basic and this one is no exception.

REAL-WORLD USE

When I turned it on the first thing I noticed was that it definitely quieter... and yes, less powerful than my corded Toro. The Toro has so much power it'll give you a bit of a jolt and move back due to the motor kicking in and air pressure. Once again, that was somewhat expected given the lower power output.

But how did it do in real-world use? Rather well, actually. I was able to "sweep" my garage, porch, drive-way, and back porch all on a single charge (with plenty to go). It makes up for less power by having a narrower tube to funnel the air. As a result, there is less sweeping area, but sufficient air flow to get the job done.

So while I did find it took just a bit longer to accomplish this regular task vs. using my Toro, I didn't mind. Reason? The light weight combined with less noise and NO WIRES were more than enough for me to pick a winner for my sweeper of choice.

As for the Vac mode, it worked as expected. Vacuuming up the pile of leaves I raked up worked just fine. It had plenty of suction to clean up all the leaves. Although when I moved onto bigger stuff, it had issues with larger twigs from bush trimming, as they ended up getting clogged. Otherwise my only other concern here is the plastic impeller that's being used. I know some more powerful wired blowers have had issues with those breaking in the past. It's possible the lower power might negate that issue, but only time will tell.

CONCLUSION

I think if you use this for what it's intended, which is light-duty yard work, you'll find that it works beautifully. Yes, I'd love for it to essentially be a cordless version of my more powerful Toro. But I don't think that's very practical. :) All things considered, the Pro's easily outweigh the minor "cons" enough to give it 5 stars and considered highly recommended.

Baracuda G3 W03000 Advanced Suction Side Automatic Pool Cleaner Review

After installing a 14x28 11,000 gallon in ground pool 5 years ago, (using the common in Florida 15 year vinyl liner type, but with reinforced fiberglass walls behind liner and cement floor under liner, and 5 ft fiberglass steps), we followed all advice forums offered to keep pool clean. It's tough in hot Florida, (no screen enclosure), where water temperature is near 90 seven months out of the year.

Was going through two 2.5 gallon jugs of liquid chlorine a week. Have an Energy Saver 2 speed pump, but on low speed, even after 12 hours a day, pool would be nasty after only a couple days. Ended up having to run the Energy Efficient pump on high speed 6 hours a day, and even then, pool was never really clean looking. Suffered like this for 4 years, and the pool was already starting to show signs of wearing out.

Bought the Barracuda G3 on sale, mainly because I was tired of cleaning pool every other day. I would kick myself if I could. Should have had this from day 1. Writing this review after 10 months of use, so that to me, is accurate of what to expect. The G3 is connected and in the pool 24/7, unless we are in the pool, then we remove it. It has enabled us to run the pool pump on high speed for only 3 hours a day. No other work is needed. Chlorine use dropped to less than a jug a week, or less than 1/2 of what we used before. The lower chlorine use saves us about $20 a month, and the lower electrical usage for the pump saves us another $20 a month or a total of $40 a month! The best part is the pool now looks like new again. I never need to brush it or do anything except occasionally empty the pump basket. 3 hours a day of G3 takes care of it all. While it has no problems going from the deep end 6ft depth to shallow ends 3ft depth, it does not stay on the side walls very long, perhaps only for about 6 feet at a time before moving back to bottom cleaning.

The hose would go into 3 step area and cause the G3 to hang. Solution was to hang a small one foot wide PVC board from end of steps grab rail. The hose "loop" now hits this board, and instead of going into step area, it forces hose out, which then keeps the G3 moving along fine.

To get the G3 to work properly requires an initial few hours testing. First, make sure you temporarily use the included flow rate indicator at end of hose, then adjust range to around the middle of scale. Move the spring load part that fits into your skimmer to get more or less flow until indicated correct. Make sure main drain is off and returns are adjusted properly, so that they do not force hose (and therefore the G3) to move into wrong areas. Make sure filter is clean. If it starts to get dirty, the G3 will not work properly. I use a 300lb sand filter with 150lb of Zeobest instead, and it rarely needs cleaned (backwashed). You must adjust the weight on the hose. It should be positioned about 1/2 way onto the last section of hose. You also need to turn the weight for final, precise steering of the G3. Try turning the weight 1/4 turn at a time, and watch the G3 for 10 to 20 minutes to see results. Turn weight and repeat until entire pool is covered. Note that when you do remove the G3 or disconnect the hoses, you change the weight to G3 relationship, and you must again spend some time to re-adjust the weight. It must go together exactly as it was taken apart (even position in skimmer) to avoid adjustments.

I also had to remove the guard wheel that is supposed to prevent it from getting stuck. It would get stuck on ladder and steps with guard installed. Removed and it now runs fine.

EDITED May 22 2012, after 3 years of daily use. A year ago the G3 Diaphragm developed a hole, like they all do. Bought two "Long Life" original diaphragms and have just had the second one fail. So two a year at less than $15 each when you buy a 2 pack. Note that this is in Florida, where the G3 runs 365 days a year, and water temp is in the upper 80's more than half the year (low 70's in the winter), as well as no screen enclosure, making water chemistry always tougher to maintain, adding to part wear. So I would think this pool is one of the worst case scenarios. Besides the warn Diaphragms needing replaced, this is still the best investment my pool has seen. Still looks like new and all of the other comments above hold true.

Not bad...

My Last Grill was a CharBroil (smaller, lighter weight, fewer knobs).
That one a tendency to dissolve. (not the box, legs, or chassis - just the burners)

I may be slow on the learning curve, - but, I went with another CharBroil.
More knobs, wider, heavier, electric ignition

so far, so good

The instructions were adequate. The drawings could use a bit more detail. The parts were all there. The buyer supplies their own tools.

The assembled grill is reasonably heavy - and quite rigid. It rolls well.
The electric ignition works - tho (to me - anyway) the battery seems to install backwards. (the battery compartment "is" a mystery) Definitely, a new mouse trap. But, if you get the battery in there correctly, it works.

The stamped stainless pieces-parts have not been deburred, which means they are sharp. Sliding your hand along an edge can result in a nice slice. Once assembled, those edges become tucked away.

This beast came in a ~ 32" X 32" X 20" box/crate, weighing in at quite heavy.
I had to use a hand truck to move it around the yard.

It was delivered by - what must be - the most unlucky UPS driver on the planet.
She managed to dump it off the back of the truck.
Then she tumbled it over and over - top to bottom, until she arrived at a bush by the side of the house.
Victorious, she retreated.

The box was non-plused by this.
The contents - more or less - survived.
Two minor dents, one annoying dent, and one dent that I pounded back out could be attributed to the delivery phenomenon.
