Zildjian A8014 20" A Zildjian Armand Ride Review

To my ears this is as close as you are going to get to a vintage A-series circa 1950s/early 60s in a modern cymbal. The sound and feel remind me of my first ride back in 1964. Back then we used our cymbals as crash/rides and this one is one of the few modern cymbals that can be used in both roles.

The sound is slightly lower pitched than other A-series, but higher than Zildjian's K-series. It has a clear stick articulation, but also has over- and undertones. This would fail miserably if you are looking for a ping ride, but if you are playing classic rock, R&B or blues this is perfect. In fact this will also work with jazz. Listen to Joe Morello's ride in Time Out and you will have an idea how this one sounds.

When crashed this opens up quickly, but has a lot of sustain after the initial attack. The bell is adequate, but not particularly loud or cutting. It's more suited for lower volume music. This is a cymbal that you will want to check out in person because I have owned and played a few of these and no two are alike. The one I currently own is a keeper, but I went through two others before I found one that I loved. However, if you can only find this online the chances of you loving it are high if you play any of the music genres I mentioned above for which this ride is best suited.

Zildjian A8015 21" A Zildjian Armand Ride Review

If you like rides with a little character and a lot of versatility this is a great choice. While it falls on the bright side sonically, it has nice over- and undertones that make it perfect for blues, classic rock and some jazz - among others. To some using a relatively bright ride for jazz may seem counter-intuitive, but consider the ride Joe Morello used on Take Five (or the entire Time Out album).

This ride has the right balance of brightness and wash, which makes it one of the most versatile ride cymbals in my arsenal. I pair mine with Armand hats and the Zildjian 19-Inch Armand Zildjian Beautiful Baby Ride Cymbal on the left and it's a perfect configuration for what I play.

Another reason why I assert that it's versatile is it is a crash/ride that does both equally well. I know that Zildjian does not advertize it as such, but it sounds perfect when playing accents or crashes. The bell is also strong.

The bottom line is this cymbal will work with just about any style of live music except those requiring a dry, ping ride. To be honest, it may be a bit of a challenge in the studio because of the wash, but if you have a good engineer you can capture the classic sound of a circa 1950s-60s Zildjian ride.

When i was 12, i had the great opportunity to play constantinople crash/ride. It truly was a beautiful experience to play with these. The logo is still the same but back then it was engraved in the cymbal. The crash was absolute projection. it sounded just like boston's first album. sib hashian played ziljians then, so i'm sure the old constantinoples shared same platform. Great to share that ziljian quality at a young age. Would play nothing else. Too bad it was later stolen. Someone got a bargin.

Zildjian K Custom 14.25" Hybrid Hi Hat Cymbals Review

I thought I'd use my 1980s Zildjian New-Beat hi-hats forever, and stumbled across these at the local store. I'm a little conservative with appearance on cymbals and so, with the "sound edge" bottom and the hybrid finish top, initially I didn't even consider taking a stick to one. Then I thought, "ah give it a go - see why they are so pricey".

Needless to say that 30 minutes later I was carrying them home. Amazing sound, strong "chip" from the pedal, without being too dominating, and an incredibly rich sizzly sound from the main body and the best swing style open/close warmth I have ever heard from a hi-hat.

Then, move up into the shiny zone (I'm sure these things all have good tech names), and the sound becomes cleaner, stronger and has a very defined and powerful cup/bell.

What an immensely flexible instrument and one that tops my new-beats in all regards.

These are really great Hi-Hats. They have great sustain and a powerful cut. I use these Hi-Hats for Metal but honestly they are great for any style. If you do decide to purchase these, I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.
