Vox AC50CPH Classic Plus Amplifier 50-watt Tube Head Review

I've gone through quite a few heads over the years, but I've held onto this one. For me, it's really like a hybrid of a Marshall JCM800 and an Orange Rockerverb with that signature, rich VOX chime (very close to the $2k Badcat Hotcat honestly). Bell like highs and thundering lows, but it really shines in the mid-range. And talk about High Gain and saturation! Most folks are really surprised when they hear it. An old bandmate picked up one, and after hearing it I immediately started looking for one as well and never looked back. It'll also tighten up pretty well, but I'd recommend running it in stereo with 6L6 driven amp like a Mesa Mark IV if you're doing really tight, fast runs.

The clean channel does break up quicker than a regular VOX AC15/30. But the amp more than makes up for that with a lush 3D sound, especially in the midrange on both clean and dirty channels. A different animal that the regular VOX AC line, but worth checking out.

Was expecting a toy. While it certainly has some toy like attributes, it is actually a quality instrument. Fit and finish are top notch on mine, and it arrived perfectly set up with some pretty sweet low action. No buzzes. Weighs a bit more than I expected, which I like, and it has a really solid feel to it. When I popped the batteries in and gave it it's first go, I was blown away. I say that cautiously, because it had a lot to do with what I was expecting. I own a Danelectro mini amp ($20) with a speaker around the same size, and I was expecting a similar sound. Totally different animal. The sound is sweet, punchy, and thicker than I anticipated. Can get real crisp too, with the bright switch kicked in. It doesn't put out a whole lot of volume, but it's definitely enough to keep up with an acoustic guitar or 2, and do whatever you might want to do with it around the house. I'd say it puts out a wee bit more volume than an acoustic/electric bass. Not a whole lot of tone variation available, but I'm happy with the little that's there. The volume and drive don't do a whole lot either. If you want the bass to be audible you pretty much have to have one dimed, and the other 3/4 up. Anything more and sadly it distorts - and not nicely. IMO.

As for pros and cons, I've got mostly pros on this. The short scale and easy action make it really fun to play, and tought to put down. Neck is a beautiful solid piece of maple, no sharp frets. Lots of beats to jam along with and inspire... and well, everything else I already stated.

Only things I'm not thrilled about are that it can get a tad noisy with the treble up (I'm used to dead silent active basses), and because of the teardrop shape the only way to really play it comfortably is with a strap. No huge deal though, especially since it comes with one included.

Almost forgot, haven't brought it to a gig or rehearsal yet, but plugged into an amp in my house it sounds like it'll hold out really well in a band situation. Only con with the plugged in sound is that you still have to have the bass turned on, if you want the volume control to be functional. Works without using the batteries, but it's full on and ya got no control.

Sweet bass. I'm picky, and I'm happy. May come back with more to say after I bring it into a band setting.

The best overdrive pedal ever made. I own quite a few of them including TS9, 808, Blues Driver, HT-Boost, etc.... Voyage Air Guitars has really pioneered here and made a great series of portable instruments. That said, I have to say that I think their quality control is lacking. This guitar is really nice overall but the tone knob on mine was severely intermittent and noisy upon receiving it. It's also the strangest neck I've played on an electric guitar. It's like a little baseball bat or club, thick and fat with a completely flat feeling fretboard and really low frets. It plays decent but it's really strange feeling compared to all my other electrics. I think they do a much better job of playability on their acoustics but again quality control and fit and finish are an issue there. If you are strictly concerned about portability I don't think there is a cooler choice than this. for playability you can do much better. The overall tones are good (if your tone knob works) but the guitar seems very bright compared to all of my other guitars so you'll need that tone knob to work to roll off quite a bit of high end at times.

Walden Acoustic Guitars Walden Guitars D351 Standard Series Dreadnought Guitar Review

I picked one of these up cheap, sight unseen, figuring for what I paid it had to be a good value. If I had paid the current amazon price as of this writing, I would have some serious buyer's regret.

First, I should say it's not a BAD guitar. It has decent fretwork and a proper neck set. The finish is nice, and everything is sturdy.

But then... The top is laminate, and while it isn't too boxy or shrill, there are other tone issues. There's not a lot of top end sparkle, and not much sustain. It's just boring. If you're looking for an instrument to blend in and fill a gap in the mix, this would suffice.

There are better values in this price point. Unless you somehow get it way below amazon's price, skip this guitar.
