Roland's breakthrough Composite Object Sound Modeling (COSM) uses the advantages of multiple modeling methods and succeeds in accurately emulating existing sounds, as well as producing sounds that have never before been created.
For guitarists, Roland's proprietary modeling technology known as COSM (Composite Object Sound Modeling) isolates and emulates all the various components in the signal chain, from the input of the amp, to the final vibration of the speaker cone. COSM then recombines these components to "model" the original amp's setup from tone stacks to speaker cabinets. This bass amp is great for it's size and weight. Sounds like a much bigger than it is. They have moved this model to a cube 120 with bells and whistles I don't need. I bought this as a backup for my first which has served me well for over five years. When I hook the two cubes together it sound like a $2000 amp, Glad I found one!

I grew up having the luxury of learning to play piano on a Kawai Baby Grand. Nothing can compare to the feel and experience of playing on a top notch acoustic piano.

However, when I moved into an apartment after college and when my aunt -- a professional pianist -- had to downsize to a condo, we both bought Roland pianos. The action is outstanding. My aunt believes that the action is actually easier on her arthritis. If you are like me and like to bang away on the piano with music to sooth the savage beast, this keyboard is particularly satisfying. I have played other electronic keyboards and stability has always been an issue even if the action was ok. Roland pianos can certainly stand up to Brahms, Beethoven, or more subdued Bach and Debussy.

The sound quality is excellent as well -- as close to an acoustic sound as you could want but with the added advantage of being able to use headphones and not bother nearby neighbors with your late night practice sessions.

The appearance of Roland pianos and the workmanship demonstrates that this is a serious instrument for serious pianists. It may not have the gravitas of a Baby Grand but it looks like a real piece of furniture and doesn't look out of place in traditional decors.

I also like the fact that his piano has all three pedals and not just two (or one) that many lesser electronic keyboards have. Again, the target here is for serious pianists.

That said, as I have grown and now have children of my own, I like having this piano for my own children to learn on. Kids can be a bit harder on instruments and you hate to buy a Steinway to have sippy cups or pocket knives dropped on it. This piano can certainly withstand punishment of kids. But it also provides a great learning mechanism so when it is time to transition to a "real" piano, they are already more or less used to "the real thing".

As an extra keyboard, a starter piano or a main piano, I can't recommend this piano enough. It will last for many years and give many many hours of pleasure.

Before my purchase, there was only one review of the DP-90 on Amazon. The review was very positive and very helpful to me. The supplier was not Kraft Music, and there was no bundle. I wanted the bundle, so I got mine from Kraft Music. Now Amazon has them from Kraft, and that's a good thing. The DP-90 has a unique compact cabinet. Ideal for tight fits, but very stylish. Inside, the piano is the same as the Roland HP-503. So you get some bang for your buck. I agree with the previous reviewer that I actually prefer to play this piano over some uprights. The keyboard is not as tight as some hybrids and the grands, but actually better than some of the best uprights. It has Roland's best action sans the simulated wood veneer on the side of white keys. Functions and features put the DP-90 closer to Roland's higher-end pianos than models like the FP-80 or F-120. I am extremely pleased. I know about the cons -- key noise with phones, scroll selection interface, etc.. I have no complaints.

I come from a background of acoustic accordions. However, when I had the opportunity buy an FR-1 on closeout, I did--because of the price. Well, it has more than earned its modest price.

Roland loves to advertise its digital accordions for reasons that I didn't have. For example, they enjoy talking about all the extras that come with these hand-held synthesizers, for that's what they are. Since purchasing my FR-1, I've never played a song in the other instruments that are available. Not what I bought it for. As with cameras, my other hobby for 40 years, it can be easy to fall into the trap of playing with gadgets instead of perfecting the craft.

It was/is no bother to me that the FR-1 has no internal amp or speakers. I use a Roland CM-30 which sounds much better than their X-models with the built-in tiny speakers. Plus, it saves weight. The FR-1 is quite light weight, especially when you consider what you're getting: an LMMMH equivalent in this tiny package. To duplicate the sound, just in the limited acoustic accordion choices, would cost several thousand Dollars and it would weigh at least twice what this accordion weighs. Plus, on this electronic instrument, one can actually tune the amount of musette desired on the appropriate registers.

The main downside of the FR-1 is that its register system determination isn't nearly as easy to work with as on the FR-1X. There are only four lighting choices on the front of the accordion, and those open up two deeper menus, all with very little indication of where one is. IOW no LCD/LED panel like the later X-models. But that's not a huge drawback for me. Also, there's no USB drive on the machine--though of course there are many other ways to get around this. I tested the FR-1X at the same time I bought the FR-1, and didn't see the advantages on the FR-1X worth the extra weight or expense. Also, the FR-1X only comes in black or red. I like the white finish on the FR-1, and also the ability to change 'skins' on the front of the machine.

I don't regret buying my FR-1 at all, with headphones it's my main practice machine now.

The best way to think of these Roland digital accordions is simply that they are hand-held synthesizers. I have a Hohner and don't consider the two the same instrument for the most part. BTW this Roland is actually built by Dallape in Italy. Those who know accordions know that old and respected name. The electronics come from Roland in Japan. I can say that the bellows action, the keys and all the switches are smooth as butter. I looked at the FR-1X also, as it's the newer and more flexible model. However, I didn't really need the USB capability, and I didn't care about whether there was a built in speaker. This accordion is perfect for practice with headphones! I do have a small Roland cube speaker that attaches with a cord if and when I want to hear out loud.

I got a new one for $800 from a dealer on closeout, so compared to the $2200+ of the 'X' model, it was an easy choice. I don't regret it at all.
