The Yamaha YMP-204M Series Marching F Mellophone is an especially responsive mellophone with a powerful upper register. Its strong, bright sound is designed to carry to the back of the football stadium. Recently improved weight distribution gives this mellophone improved balance. With improved comfort and free-blowing response, this mellophone is a very accessible instrument for a French horn player doubling on the mellophone. The YMP-204M has a .462 bore and a 10 yellow brass bell with an improved shape for optimal projection. It also has 3 nickel-plated pistons and a 1st valve slide thumb hook. I am in the Pride of the Southland Marching Band at the University of Tennessee and I play the mellophone. We use this exact same model and all I can say is it gets the job done. It is not balanced very well because of the weight of the bell, but it has a pretty good tone quality overall.

Trombones that look and feel and sound like this one are difficult to find. Let's look at everything individually.

LOOK
----
The trombone looks solid. Its sturdy and resists dings and water spotting quite well (compared to my old horn, anyway). There's a few different metals used here. You can notice up close, but I can't tell too much from far away. The bell's metal is a little different in order to provide better sound quality.

I didn't purchase mine from Amazon, so I can't give the exact optional contents. Mine came with everything I need. But if yours doesn't come with everything, I'd recommend getting a microfiber and a polishing cloth to keep it in prestine condition.

FEEL
----
With some high quality lube, the slide nearly bolts out of your hand like a negative-friction physics anamoly. You'll hit notes faster and cleaner than you can with a lesser horn.

The F-attachment's trigger is my only complaint with this horn. Mine occasionally sticks to this day. I've learned to hook my thumb around it and pull back to close it. I fear I may be using too much lubricant in combination with not getting it cleaned out enough, so you might not have the same problem. After a fresh cleaning, it tends to work fine with no problems for quite some time.

If you are used to a smaller bore instrument, practice with this horn a while before you play it because it requires more wind and a few different muscles.

After you've excelled with this horn, you'll sound crystal clear with it. And if you have a smaller bore marching horn, you'll sound even better with that with your increased air capacity.

SOUND
-----
I have yet to hear a horn that I like better. I'm sure they're out there. But I was not in the least disappointed with what this horn could produce.

On some horns, you may notice a frequency that causes the horn to twang (my old yamaha marching horn was low C -- TWANNNNNGGG!). I can't find a single note on this horn that gives that effect.

You'll notice an improved range on this horn if you're moving from a standard tenor trombone. The F-attachment will give you some lower notes and the larger bore will help you play them. The down-side is that you'll have to work up your upper registers again. I could hit an A regularly with my old horn, but even a G was a bit iffy once I got it. I was able to work my way back up with a few months of practice.

OVERALL

I really enjoyed this horn. I've never gone to another since. However, I think you'd do yourself a disservice if don't go to a local music store and try some horns out for yourself with a professional. You may notice something on another horn that you like better. Or you might find a better price (admittedly, this price is very price-competitive).

If you're not in a location with a professional music store and you have the money and the desire to get a top-grade trombone, then I think you'd have a safe bet with this one.

Yamaha YTS-875EX Custom Tenor Saxophone Lacquer Review

Bought a new but damaged YTS-875EX Custom w/o case from a pawn shop on internet. Delivered by FEDEX Overnight...big mistake. Bell lip bent, and lower set keys all bent, even when the sax was well packaged in bubble wrap and double boxed. Had a repair man work on it to get the sax into playing shape. He did a great job! It looks and plays like a brand new horn. This speaks to the quality of the material used to make this sax. It's almost as good as my 1971 Selmer Mark VI Tenor which I bought new. I feel that it's a bit brighter in sound and the intonation is right on. The key layout is very comfortable and it screams with a G.Lawton 6 Star B or Guardala MBII mouthpiece. The dark lacquer is awesome. It comes with a G-3 neck but I feel it sounds better with a G-1GP neck. It's just a great sax and you can't go wrong getting one.

Yanagisawa T-901 Professional Tenor Saxophone Lacquer Review

I did a tremendous amount of research before buying a saxophone, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase of the T901. Yanagisawa only makes saxophones,and they only make high quality saxophones--- no low level entry horns. Yanagisawa is known for shipping consistently well made horns to sellers, and the horns are known to require very little setup at the sellers shop, so these horns are better than most if you are going to purchase a saxophone without trying it out (over the internet).

These horns are said to play in tune over the full range of the sax, and I found that to be true with my horn (I tend to go a slightly sharp on high notes, but not too sharp, and I am a new saxophone player, so going a little sharp is likely due to my inexperience). My horn plays easily from top to bottom, so I am really impressed with this saxophone. The tone is great, and the horn feels great in your hands. The saxophone came in a high quality case.

I would recommend doing an internet search for sellers of new T901's, and then call some of these sellers and ask for their absolute best price. You should do this regardless of the brand of saxophone you are buying because most musical instrument manufacturers don't allow internet sellers to post their best price online. You are likely to save an additional 10%-15% off the prices that you are seeing online. Also, be sure to buy from someone known to setup the horns that they ship, even though Yanagisawa's need little set-up. My research lead me to conclude that many other brands of horns require a lot of set-up, even the other big names. Finally, buy from someone who will let you return it if you are not happy ---there are sellers who allow you to play the horn for a few days and then return it if the horn does not measure up.
