I just got this drum in advance of a full Live Custom kit I ordered that is on backorder. Tried it out at a couple of blues/funk gigs this weekend and all I can say is....wow! This drum is incredible, when tuned high it delivers a crack that easily cuts through the mix without losing it's basic sonic character, tuned low it takes on a lot of depth and fullness, easily projecting through the band. Simple backbeats were delivered with explosive power on command, driving the house and making it an easy choice for funk, R&B, and rock. What amazed me though is it's ability to shift gears completely: it is also incredibly sensitive, so that ghost notes where clearly audible and pronounced at every dynamic level...you could easily use this for jazz as well. I think this drum seems particularly voiced to work well with the full Live Custom kit (will know more when I can try it with the whole kit when it comes in). I used mine with a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz and it worked fine, though it felt just slightly mismatched as the Gretsch has more of a warm, classic, and round tone and much less volume, so this Live Custom snare was quite pronounced in that context.

All in all, probably one of the best wood snares I have played! On top of the sound, the fit and finish is perfect, the lacquer is high quality and looks fantastic. Can't go wrong with this drum for sure, Yamaha has a real winner on their hands!
