ToneRite for Ukulele Review

I became aware of the tonerite on a very popular ukulele forum. The comments were along the lines of: 1) it's too expensive 2) it's too loud 3) it's sacrilegious to use an electronic device to open up the sound of your uke vs. letting nature take it's course and 4) it can't possibly work (general comment of those who've never tried it). I agree with some of these comments.

For the price of the ukulele tonerite, you could buy yourself another pretty decent uke. I don't know why it is priced higher than the guitar tonerite (which still isn't cheap), but price is, and will be, a barrier for a lot of people. It is the reason I rated it 4 stars, and not 5. I overcame the price issue because a) I had an Amazon gift card which greatly reduced my cash outlay and b) tonerite offers a 30 day money back guarantee. So my view was if it didn't work, I would have time to return it at no risk.

After over-coming the price issue, the reason I took the plunge is that I've got 2 tenors, a concert, and a soprano. It's hard to show them all of the love they deserve, so I viewed the tonerite as a possible way to keep them "tuned-up". Because I was skeptical, the first uke I placed the tonerite on was the one I play the most, a Kanilea Tenor. I've had this for 18 months and I probably honestly play it an average of 2 hours a day. There's no question I had already experienced an improvement in sound over that time. My expectations were the tonerite would not make any difference because it already gets played so much. Tonerite recommends for the first "treatment" you leave it on the uke for at least 72 hours. Heck, I left it on for an entire week (168 hours) while I spent time with my other ukes. When I picked up the Kanilea tenor again and started playing I was simply blown away. I could not believe the improvement in volume, sustain, brightness and clarity. And I thought it sounded great before I tried the tonerite!

Next I tried it on a Pono cedar/rosewood tenor. The improvement was not as dramatic and I attribute that to the cedar top. Volume was never an issue for that uke. The improvement came in the sustain and clarity. Not as dramatic improvement as with the Koa, but improvement never the less. Then I slapped it on a Kanilea soprano which gets played the least. Again, dramatic improvement. Finally, placed it on a Pono mahogany concert. Again, volume was never an issue on this one. Improvement was in the brightness and clarity. Had I gotten the tonerite just for the Pono cedar/rosewood, I don't know that the improvement on that one would have justified the cost.

Addressing some of the other initial comments, if you turn it up to vibrate the instrument as much as it can, it can be loud. How you place the tonerite on the ukulele, and how you place the ukulele itself affects the volume (the farther you can lean the ukulele back without touching anything solid, the better). I just put it in an empty bedroom initially so I couldn't hear it at all. Now that I've learned better how to work with it, volume is not a problem.

As to the issue of whether it's wrong to use the tonerite versus letting nature take it's natural course; that's for each person to decide. I don't know how many years it would have taken for my Kanilea tenor to get to the sound I enjoy today. All I know is I don't feel cheated by speeding up the process.

So you might also be considering the idea of buying it, treating your ukes to get this kind of improvement, then returning it within the 30 day window. Yep, you can do that. But in the instructions tonerite says that if you don't continue to use the device on the instrument periodically the improvements you initially gained will degrade over time. After a couple of weeks 0f not using it on the Kanilea tenor, I could see(and hear) what they meant. So I am now in the habit putting my uke on the tonerite for about an hour before I play it. Sounds great.

I've now had the tonerite for two months, and there is no way I would ever give it up. Hope this helps.

This is my third bow, although it's the least expensive, it is not the cheapest. I really enjoy playing this bow. I started as a guitar player and the entire bowing thing has been difficult for me to master. With this bow I feel my playing moved up several notches. It think it's the weight and the balance, plus the shape seems to hold the "bow" in the bow better when the hair is tightened. GREAT BUY AGAIN.

Tortuga Effects Manhattan Flanger Pedal Review

the flanger is well built and is smaller than what i expected. For this price, I would have enjoyed a screwdriver-free battery compartment, but it looks like it will last for years.

The controls are surprising. It requires some time to get used to what the knobs can do and how they interact together, but in the end, this flanger pedal is more than a one trick poney that only does that odd airplaine flanger sound.

You can make it sound like a chorus pedal similar to the intro of Nothing else Matters. It has the ability to sound like vintage flangers and it can get "over-the-top" and not so useful if you are too extreme with the settings. I'd say if you like vintage and subtle and versatile flange, this is a very nice pedal, but considering this pedal costs 300$, if you're only interested in the airplane sound buy a cheaper product.

TOV Signature Series Mixer 12U Combo Case Review

I purchased the 14u version of this rack (T-14MRSS) and I love it. I am a mobile DJ and a perfectionist so I only buy top quality products. This rack was built very sturdily and lives up to my expectations. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. I will soon buy the laptop shelf that slides on this and I will comment on that too.

Pros:
-Looks Awesome
-Very strong and does not wobble or shift
-Spring loaded handles are low enough to lift rack and walk with ease
-Ball supports on all corners are very strong and protects doorways and walls
-Even though the rack is only 10u from font to back, I can still put 12u worth of mixers and still have rooms for all the Wires I would need.
-Swinging door in back is solid on hinges
-Sturdy latches that can be locked with a small separate lock
-heavy duty wheels (Hard Rubber)with smooth wheel bearings (excluding the pivot bearing that allow the wheel to turn)
-Wheels have breaks (If i try, I can force the wheels to turn)
-The mixer has the perfect amount of slant
-The rack rails are metal and solid
-The rack rails are per-threaded
-Comes with rack screws

Cons:
-The holes drilled in the rack rails are inconsistent (but work fine)

Traben Basses Array 4 Series TRAA4SBK 4-String Bass Guitar, Black Satin Review

I have played bass for over 10 years for everything from church bands to death metal bands. I've performed and done studio work as a bass player. I used to preach nothing but 5 & 6 string basses (because of the extra range) but I started playing with a band who kind of followed the idea of Brain Drill (complex bass tapping lines mimicing the guitar) and I found the 6 stringer was just too big for my hands to quickly move the scales. I remembered seeing the band Skillet on stage with a Traben a few years ago and I was really impressed with the look and the sound. I did research on Traben and everything sounded great so I ordered this bass from Musicians Friend (when it was on sale for like $279.00)

First, know that this is a professional grade bass! If you're buying this for a beginner, you are getting something that they can play all the way to whatever status they are trying to reach. It is also great for tone shaping so a pro would love to have this on hand for all their needs.

The electronics are incredible. They sound great, have that huge punch but capable of being toned down for that dead sound. Response to both fingers and picks is very smooth. They are active but battery life seems to be normal to better than most. Tone, volume, and then your preamp. Perfect for doing minor adjustments. Usually I replace my pickups in every guitar but I don't want to ruin this sound by changing these. The only other guitar I've never changed pickups in is my D6 bass.

The bridge is actually the tribal design so it is very strudy, which I like. I was surprised to find the body was made of bass wood and the neck of maple. The cheaper quality wood does not seem to affect the tone. I have basses made from much higher quality materials that don't come close to this one. There is a lot of contact between the neck and body which amplifies the tone and makes it unique. The guitar is very stripped down and streamlined so that it is not heavy, but has enough mass to make a BIG tone. Color options are a little limited, I'm not one for the satin black look, but it is still a beautiful instrument.

I use this bass mainly for laying bass tracks in the studio now. It is great recording direct. The lightweight/big tone attribute makes it a perfect performance bass as well. If you're in the market for something that will continue to serve you and make your friends jealous I highly recommend this bass. I'm still amazed everytime I pick mine up and play it.
