Please bear in mind that although I am an avid musician (piano, synth, acoustic guitar) I am new to congas so my evaluation is from an amateur's perspective.

After playing a variety of models in local music stores and browsing online shops and used options I decided to try the relatively unknown Tycoon Percussion because I wanted a step up from CP/Aspire type instruments but was not ready to spend at the pro level for a conga. This was a bit of a shot in the dark, but I can always return if unsatisfied, right?

Anyway as you can see from the 5-star rating I have been quite pleased. The natural finish looks great with smooth gloss lacquer and silver-colored hardware. The head is great, one of the best I've played on - very soft and thin, not dry at all. The basket stand is adjustable and holds the conga without leaving marks on it. After some tuning and practice the quinto sounds great. Bass is solid and slaps are crisp. The open tone is good, with a few overtones but nothing objectionable.

My only complaints are that I did not find a tuning wrench in the box (but any standard 1/2" wrench works fine) and that I would prefer a dark wood finish (like mahogany or walnut). Overall the Tycoon is a great choice and excellent value.
