I have been using this drum since purchasing it in June 2010, usually playing it with one of my djembes to complement the sound. I recommend this to individuals that are familiar with tuning a drum (no more advanced than a tom or snare), so that they can get the best sound. The drum skin is a little thinner than my djembes, but still plenty strong enough to hold up to some hard hand drumming. As usual, DO NOT use regular drum sticks on this drum - it is not made for this.

Here are the details I have observed about sound and tuning tweaks:

Tuning:

When the drum first arrived, the sound that it produced was quite flat, which is understandable. The drum comes with a wrench to tighten the nuts, so I used this to start the adjustments. I recommend using a product named "DrumDial" ([...]) to see the timpanic pressure of the head at each nut interval and adjust it evenly across the head. The nice thing about this is that once you find the number on the dial that is the drum's "sweet spot," you can document it and keep it tuned consistently to that number. I do this with my drums, traditional and hand percussion - $60 well spent.
I suggest checking the tuning at least once a month, but it all depends on weather and drum use. If it is damp, the head will be looser. If it is dry and cold, it will be tight - I recommend tuning it lower in the winter if you are in the Northern US to help keep the skin in good condition.

Sound:

This is always tricky to explain - The bass tone is solid, but higher than a 14" toca freestyle djembe. The slap tones are fantastic and the sound projection is very nice if you have it off the floor at least 6-8 inches. The only issue that I have run into is holding the drum between my legs - This a solid wood frame with a nice wrap and metal hardware. It's twenty pounds of fun that gets heavy...
