I've had this bass (Traben Array 5) for two years and I like it much better than my Fender Active 5 (MIM) Jazz bass. The Traben has better playability, better sound (though the Fender isn't bad), there's a wider range of sound, and of course the looks are awesome. Unfortunately I have to use the Fender more often because the "looks" of the Traben don't go well with playing in a church Praise Team band (though I do bring it occasionally).

It has a huge low-end and when I turn the bass EQ knob slightly past the mid-point the house starts to shake even with the amp at low volume. You get a significantly different sound when you select the bridge versus the neck pickup (neck is better for slap), and since it is controlled by a knob you have a wide range to choose from. While my Fender has this same knob, it doesn't seem like the variation is quite as much, probably because the Traben uses a humbucker at the bridge.

The Traben has a longer scale than standard basses like the Fender, and that's also another thing I like about it (feels better for me, perhaps since I'm 6'-3". (Note: you'll need to buy the extended scale strings).

The Traben is also significantly lighter than the Fender. I've seen some reviewers say they have trouble with the [physical] balance when strapped over your shoulder, but generally I don't have a problem, though I do notice it. You may have to hold it a little different from the older, heavier bass designs, but no big deal once you get the hang of it (yes, pun intended).

I think the price might throw people off a little. Generally it's around $500 and that might make it seem like a "starter" bass. I must admit, it was my "starter" bass (after playing guitar for 20 years and wanting to try something else). But I think it's somewhat inexpensive because of the relatively simple look (flat black, no binding, dot inlays). The look of the bridge makes up for all that. There's no scratching sound when the knobs are turned and they feel nice and smooth - so really good quality. The three tone knobs have mid-point detents to help you know where you are. Six bolts connect the neck to the body - nice. Most of the time it stays in tune even after a week of sitting idle or consistent use. Even the low-B stays steady (which a lot people fight with - the B on the Fender almost always need re-tuning). Intonation and setup from the factory were great - slight fret buzz when I had old strings but seems to have gone away when I put on new strings.

The only issue I've had was when I was putting the bass on over my head (during the service at church). I still had a good grip on the neck so I saved it from crashing. The carve at the bottom tends to flare the strap hole area up, but a better strap or a good strap-lock should take care of that.
