TC Electronic FireworX Multi Effect Processor Review

i've managed to use my Fireworx unit for a total of about two hours. Due to life issues, i had it in storage for most of the time i've owned it. Storage meant: in the original packaging and indoors (not a garage or U-Store-It village). So it was well taken care of when not in use. It spent a good amount of time also set up in a rack or two, between those two hours of use, in its standby mode with the annoying red blinking light on the power button. But that annoying blinking LED is your friend; it tells you that the power supply isn't dead.

Mine is dead. It's been set up and powered on a couple times as i was testing out my new studio setup. Life has gotten to where i can put time into my music hobby again, so here it is ready for use again. Or not. The blinking LED is no more. The power is switched on. The cable is fine. It's just dead.

A look around the web has shown that this is a common problem with these units. Their power supplies die. Sometimes repeatedly. Look on Harmony Central and Gear Slutz for "Fireworx" and "power supply" and you'll see what i refer to. Here's one thread: [...]

Otherwise, this seems like a very cool device. It has all the ins and outs i need and a modular internal routing of the effects it provides. For two hours, this thing was great fun to run all manner of sound sources through. Too bad i didn't get to do more than play a bit with it. Now i have to figure out how to get it repaired when i'm dirt poor.

i've read that a design change was made to the power supply that was intended to solve the frequent death of the power supplies, but i have no proof of this and have no idea if mine was manufactured before or after that change. Good luck on buying your own unit. If you like hardware, you might like this unit. As long as it lasts.

If i have any positive success with servicing the unit, i'll try to come back and update my review with the results.
