I come from a background of acoustic accordions. However, when I had the opportunity buy an FR-1 on closeout, I did--because of the price. Well, it has more than earned its modest price.

Roland loves to advertise its digital accordions for reasons that I didn't have. For example, they enjoy talking about all the extras that come with these hand-held synthesizers, for that's what they are. Since purchasing my FR-1, I've never played a song in the other instruments that are available. Not what I bought it for. As with cameras, my other hobby for 40 years, it can be easy to fall into the trap of playing with gadgets instead of perfecting the craft.

It was/is no bother to me that the FR-1 has no internal amp or speakers. I use a Roland CM-30 which sounds much better than their X-models with the built-in tiny speakers. Plus, it saves weight. The FR-1 is quite light weight, especially when you consider what you're getting: an LMMMH equivalent in this tiny package. To duplicate the sound, just in the limited acoustic accordion choices, would cost several thousand Dollars and it would weigh at least twice what this accordion weighs. Plus, on this electronic instrument, one can actually tune the amount of musette desired on the appropriate registers.

The main downside of the FR-1 is that its register system determination isn't nearly as easy to work with as on the FR-1X. There are only four lighting choices on the front of the accordion, and those open up two deeper menus, all with very little indication of where one is. IOW no LCD/LED panel like the later X-models. But that's not a huge drawback for me. Also, there's no USB drive on the machine--though of course there are many other ways to get around this. I tested the FR-1X at the same time I bought the FR-1, and didn't see the advantages on the FR-1X worth the extra weight or expense. Also, the FR-1X only comes in black or red. I like the white finish on the FR-1, and also the ability to change 'skins' on the front of the machine.

I don't regret buying my FR-1 at all, with headphones it's my main practice machine now.
