Developed in collaboration with guitarist and historian Eric Schoenberg, the Recording King O and OO guitars (RP1-626 and RP2-626) offer players the even frequency response, clarity and wider neck traditional to a classic parlor style, but the unique addition of a cutaway gives fingerstyle guitarists easier access to the upper frets. On both the RP1-626 and RP2-626, the one-piece mahogany neck with a classic v-profile meets the body at the 12-fret with a hand cut dovetail joint, giving these guitars a true small body sound, warm and rich, but perfectly balanced. The solid AAA Engelmann spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides have been carefully selected and hand-assembled. With a 1-3/4� � nut width, Grover tuners, ebony fretboard and ebony pyramid bridge, these O and OO guitars are as well-appointed and unique as they are beautiful. Each guitar is sprayed with a thin coat of nitrocellulose lacquer and then hand-buffed for a finish that is extremely resonant and historically accurate. I purchased an RP1-626-C used and while I think the price new is a reasonably good value, the price for a used RP1 is an outstanding value. I am exclusively a fingerstyle player, and I play with three modified Alaska Piks on my fingers and a modified Kelly Slick Pick on my thumb.

The good:

Sound and playability. This guitar has an honest and warm sound which is balanced and clear throughout the registers. The top is quick to respond to fingerstyle playing and the tone favors the midrange (string choice plays a factor here, of course). The neck profile, nut width and saddle spacing contribute to top-notch ergonomics for both hands. As a matter of fact, my opinion is that the "Schoenberg V" profile of this neck makes it among the most user friendly I have ever encountered over decades of playing guitars. The profile is as good, and maybe slightly better, than the profile on my beloved Collings OM.

The not-so-good:

Fit and finish issues, notably a bridge that has started to lift ($120 repair) and the Grover tuners seem to slip a bit over a short period of time.

In summary, the RP1-626-C is a serious, professional musical instrument at a price (particularly used) that is within reach of practically anyone. I can forgive the manufacturing glitches in light of the way this guitar performs as a musical instrument. If you are used to other guitar body styles, like the dreadnought for example, my advice would be to take the time to learn how to get the most from this guitar. It has a lot to offer!

Update:

A problem has surfaced - the bridge has developed a crack. The cause, I am told, is a very tall saddle combined with a thin bridge. That is, there is not a lot of wood between the saddle slot and the edge of the bridge. The risky tall saddle, it was explained to me, was likely put in place to compensate for the neck angle. The proper fix is replace the bridge, reset the neck to a more reasonable angle - that is, on that would permit the saddle to not rise so high. So, I log this as a manufacturing problem and must reduce my star rating.
