We got my son a Taylor 214ce LEFTY because he's ambidextrous and wanted to play with both hands. We saw the guitar at a Taylor Road Show in our area & neither of us could believe the sound and quality. I don't think there's a comparable acoustic electric cutaway on the market for under $1000 & the hard gig bag that comes with it is excellent protection.
I have custom Taylors in the 1000s and was amazed how well this entry level compares.
I am a believer in getting the most expensive, quality guitar one can afford for a young player and this 214ce would be my choice.Solidly constructed and as a Taylor owner, I know their customer service is excellent.
This is a Made in Mexico Taylor. And the side and back are laminate not solid. In some climates that could be a more durable choice. If made in America and solid tonewoods side & back matter to you: you will probably be paying $500 more. So you just have to decide what matters to you and your budget concerns, level of player.
For entry level...for the money... I don't think you'll find a better sounding more durable acoustic-electric cutaway instrument! This is the Grand Auditorium body shape and Taylor considers this shape their workhorse. Plays a wide range of music beautifully. Tone is forgiving unlike solid koa and maple which can be brighter and highlight your mistakes.
