SS-10 Saga Old Time Banjo : The Saga Old Time Banjo is reminiscent of the classic banjos produced by S.S. Stewart in Philadelphia over one hundred years ago. Saga has incorporated a slightly heavier maple rim with a rolled brass tone ring to produce an instrument retaining the traditional look and feel of banjos produced in that Golden Age. In the last century, banjos were parlor instruments strung with gut. The heavier rim design along with planetary pegs and a geared fifth peg were added to compensate for the increased tension and torque of modern steel strings. This banjo is certain to become universal favorite.

SAGA SS-10 Old Time Banjo Review

Saga has been providing excellent repro traditional instruments for many years now, and I have several: bluegrass banjos, a mandolin, and now one of these little gems.

The SS10 is an open-back banjo with strong decorative references to the old S.S. Stewart banjos still prized by old-timey banjo players. It has a rolled tone ring on the wood rim, like many of the old banjos. The dark wood stain is nice looking. The tone is perfect for clawhammer playing. (I modified mine with a fiberskin head to make it a bit tubbier. I also replaced the tuners with Grover pancakes and added a discreet Stewart-McDonald Vega-style armrest. Still a bargain after all that.)

I recommend this highly to players getting started on traditional banjo styles. If you get really good, you may find that spending over a grand on a fancier banjo doesn't improve on this puppy so very much.
