Washburn Baby Jumbo Series WB400SWK Acoustic Guitar Review

Wow... just received this guitar and changed up the strings and gave it a polish - and it's just an awesome little thing... this Washburn sports all solid-wood construction with a nice, gloss finished cedar top, beautiful dark rosewood back and sides, ebony bridge and fretboard, three-piece mahogany and rosewood neck, gold Grover old-style tuners, and nice abalone inlays on the headstock, soundhole, back center stripe and fret oval dot markers. She's got an unique squished appearance with an oval soundhole and exaggerated curves in the middle and lower bout - looks kind of like a gourd according to my son! Full body, neck and head creme binding. Just nice, top-notch materials and craftsmanship - no weird lumps or slopes - just a great quality guitar. To think that this is a Chinese-manufactured guitar is surprising and says a lot about how much they've advanced in terms of guitar production.

I gotta say something about the next - must have been made with a CNC machine and its dead straight and low just like a Taylor or a Larrivee. It came with lights and I switched to medium 13's and it required no neck truss adjustment - just absolutely straight, low and no string buzz. After letting the new strings get adjusted, I started playing it and it just sang out with with crisp, glassy, piano-like, harpsichord-like clarity and vibrance. Folks say that the cedar/rosewood combo make for a dark, muddled sound - but this one sounds bright, rich and yet deep. Not boomy or tingy - just nicely balanced, loud and clear. Responds really well with aggressive attacks and light fingerpicking. Just wonderful!

The dimensions of this guitar are quite unique - shorter than most guitars - it's got a mini-jumbo shape but its about the same size as an OM or orchestra model 00 or 000. It feels like a 4/5 size guitar - larger than a Baby Taylor and Parlor, but shorter and more compact than my Martin 000. The result is a comfy playing experience. The lower bout must be about 16 inches wide and so you can tell its there, but the body depth is about 4 inches and so it doesn't dig into you - very easy to play for gals and kids. The neck is NOT wide - probably 1 5/8 - so some might balk at it being a fingerstyle guitar. But for smaller hands, the neck is extremely easy to play and fret. The total gloss finish makes for a smooth neck playability. The guitar is also light - nothing like the tank-Guilds that I've always been partial to.

As I play this thing, I can't help but think this thing feels and plays like a Larrivee OM09 or L09 deluxe rosewood series or a Taylor 700 series. I got this for less than a grand and so I'm amazed and deeply impressed that this thing feels and plays and looks like it could sell for $3000 and up. Seriously. This is a Washburn too - I've never thought much of them until I owned a Timbercraft series jumbo a few years ago - another solid wood rosewood killer. I gave that one away and this second Washburn confirms that beyond the entry level guitars they offer, Washburn is making some incredible bang-for-the-buck acoustics. Oh yea, the hard case is a nice, molded hard shell case that fits the unique shape perfectly.

So overall, you can tell that I'm blown away by this petite little thing. The odd shape of this Washburn WB400SWK is totally unique and a bit funny looking - but the smile on my face is one of delight instead of ridicule. Those who may chuckle at it will grin with amazement after picking this thing up and giving it a spin. This makes me so happy to be playing again and I'm just in guitar bliss.
