Single Cut Set Neck Electric, Flame Maple Veneer Top, Mahogany Sides/Back, Flame Black Burst.Washburn Original Idol Series WIDLXFBB Electric Guitar Review
Let me start by saying that the guitar I received was NOT the one pictured!! I was so disappointed, that I seriously thought about sending it back. It may not seem like a big thing to most, but I specifically choose this one because of where the pick-up selector is located. Oh well, moving along...For a Washburn I was expecting a bit more, then what came next.
The neck had to be straightened, it wasn't a big deal, but I've had straighter necks on guitars half this price! With a slight hump in the neck, around fret 6, the action was setup way to high, and still buzzed badly. (Right out of the box)!
After looking over the rest of the guitar though, and deciding to keep it, I straightened it out, post haste! It took over half a turn to get it right. Then lowered the action, and found myself playing an instrument that reviled the big boys! All I can say now about playability is WOW! No buzz, no where, no how, no way.
I didn't get any documentation with it either, so I wasn't prepared for what else lay in store for me. Now all the guitars I have ever owned which have had four pots, which have been numerous considering I've been playing for nearly 50 years, have always been two volumes and two tones. Not on this Washburn though.
This guitar has one volume, and the other three pots act as a three band EQ. After I figured that out, I decided that I liked the idea, and have been thrilled by the wide range of tones I've been able to get out of her. I can get an out of phase sound out of each pick-up, or both pick-ups at the same time if I so choose. Nice touch.
I've have had some outrageously expensive guitars in my time, from Gibson LP, SG, and an original 1961 LP Jr, which was valued at over $5000.00, back in 1982. Also along the way I've had a few Fenders including a Jaguar.
With today's technology though, you no longer have to break the bank to have a great playing guitar. Not one of the 5 guitars I own today, cost me more the $800.00. And this little Washburn is holding her own quite nicely.
So what do I think of this guitar?
Well, after the initial shock of a totally unplayable guitar, IMO. I am beside myself. This little thing has proven herself to be a worthy alternative to almost any of the guitars I have ever owned.
I would highly recommend this little bundle of joy, that is, if you know how to set up a guitar, or know someone who does.
