If you do your research on this keyboard around the web, you'll find an abundance of warnings about it. Everything from sporadic note velocities being sent over midi to improperly aligned sensors. Because of the size and specs, I decided to try my luck on it and see if maybe those voices of disdain were possibly just the exception and not the norm. After all, StudioLogic has a pretty decent reputation and I've owned 2 keyboard controllers of theirs previously.

I should have headed the warnings on this keyboard. It truly is a disappointing piece in its manufacturing. Now that's not to say that the concept and design aren't amazing; they truly are. The feel of these keys are unsurpassed at this price range. I've not played anything that even comes close to the feel of this keyboard, except for the extremely expensive Roland V-Piano. It also looks really great. There are some inherent questionable design choices, like the mod wheel, USB, and pedal inputs on the left side. I had a custom desk made for this keyboard so having the inputs on the left side required me to find angled cables and adapters for everything so that it would fit in the tight space between the keyboard and the side of the desk. It would have been a lot easier if the inputs where on the back like every other keyboard controller in the history of keyboard controllers. Overlooking these flaws, this is the best FEELING keyboard controller I've ever owned. Hands down. That was worth the trouble that I went through on this... and I went through a LOT of trouble.

Here's where it gets interesting... I ordered the keyboard through Amazon from a retailer called Music123, which I've learned is just another name for Musician's Friend. The transaction went fine and I was happy that I was able to find it as they're backordered everywhere else. The keyboard arrived a few days later and it was huge and heavy. I was really hoping that everything was ok with it because I didn't want to have to lug this thing back to the UPS shipping office. I opened it up and turned it on and sure enough, half of the LCD was non-operational, the plastic music stand add-on was chipped, and the keys were subtly misaligned. It was pretty clear that the box had been dropped or mishandled in a significant way. I could have dealt with these things if it played right, but the misaligned keys made it pretty much non-playable. I called Music123 and we decided that I should send it back rather than try to have it repaired, so I did. They had UPS come and pick it up, so the only real trouble was packing it up and being sad that I wouldn't have a keyboard for another week. I decided not to wait. I called up a local retailer (WestLAMusic, if you must know....) and the awesome sales dude there swung some weight around and was able to find one and get it to me within a day. So, I brought home the second one and eagerly started playing. Keys were perfectly aligned, felt great, LCD was bright and perfect, and there were no cosmetic flaws whatsoever. I'm happy. But then... I plug it in and wouldn't you know it, I'm getting double midi messages sent on every 5th key. Grrr.... This absolutely will not do. So I call my awesome WestLA sales rep and he responds appropriately, however, this time he's unable to get another one. He found out that these things are made in a factory in Tunisia (NOT in Italy like the company claims) and said factory was recently bombed which for some reason, slowed production on these things and the ones that are escaping are seriously flawed, like the one I got. Meanwhile, any attempts to contact StudioLogic to discuss this issue are complete dead ends. They're in Italy. Nobody speaks English, their website has no contact info other than a web-form in Italian that they don't answer anyway (I attempted several times with no responses). Their American distributor doesn't return calls or emails either.

So... I'm stuck and looking for other options at this point, which are tough since I already had my desk custom made for this size keyboard and there's nothing else out there with these dimensions except for another StudioLogic one... not going there. Thankfully, Mr. Awesome finally gets in touch with his distributor that he got the keyboard from and they offer to have it repaired at a local shop and they even shipped them the required replacement parts from a b-stock unit that they had. A week went by, the keyboard was fixed and I now have it in my desk, fully functional, and playing awesome. Truth is, I love it. It was worth the hassle. But I wanted to explain my plight here so that you perspective buyers know the potential of what you could be getting into with this one. Caveat emptor, but know that in the end, if you get one that works as advertised, you will absolutely love it, just like I do. To quote the great Ferris Bueller... It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.
