Product Description

The APACHE Series travel guitars resurrected the VOX Teardrop and Phantom body styles. Now, the APACHE Bass brings these popular body styles to the bassist. As with the guitar models, there are four color variations, each with a pop sensibility that matches its distinctive design. In addition to the authentic body designs, these travel basses host a 2-channel bass amplifier, speakers, dozens of rhythm patterns, even a convenient E-String tuner - all built into the bass itself. These exceptional basses are a great choice for entry-level players and students, and for musicians seeking easy playing at home or on tour.

VOX APACHE1BWH 4-String Travel Bass Guitars with Built-In Amplifier and Rhythms Review

Was expecting a toy. While it certainly has some toy like attributes, it is actually a quality instrument. Fit and finish are top notch on mine, and it arrived perfectly set up with some pretty sweet low action. No buzzes. Weighs a bit more than I expected, which I like, and it has a really solid feel to it. When I popped the batteries in and gave it it's first go, I was blown away. I say that cautiously, because it had a lot to do with what I was expecting. I own a Danelectro mini amp ($20) with a speaker around the same size, and I was expecting a similar sound. Totally different animal. The sound is sweet, punchy, and thicker than I anticipated. Can get real crisp too, with the bright switch kicked in. It doesn't put out a whole lot of volume, but it's definitely enough to keep up with an acoustic guitar or 2, and do whatever you might want to do with it around the house. I'd say it puts out a wee bit more volume than an acoustic/electric bass. Not a whole lot of tone variation available, but I'm happy with the little that's there. The volume and drive don't do a whole lot either. If you want the bass to be audible you pretty much have to have one dimed, and the other 3/4 up. Anything more and sadly it distorts - and not nicely. IMO.

As for pros and cons, I've got mostly pros on this. The short scale and easy action make it really fun to play, and tought to put down. Neck is a beautiful solid piece of maple, no sharp frets. Lots of beats to jam along with and inspire... and well, everything else I already stated.

Only things I'm not thrilled about are that it can get a tad noisy with the treble up (I'm used to dead silent active basses), and because of the teardrop shape the only way to really play it comfortably is with a strap. No huge deal though, especially since it comes with one included.

Almost forgot, haven't brought it to a gig or rehearsal yet, but plugged into an amp in my house it sounds like it'll hold out really well in a band situation. Only con with the plugged in sound is that you still have to have the bass turned on, if you want the volume control to be functional. Works without using the batteries, but it's full on and ya got no control.

Sweet bass. I'm picky, and I'm happy. May come back with more to say after I bring it into a band setting.
